‘I’m Concerned’: Republicans Vote To Remove State GOP Chairwoman

The Michigan Republican Party voted to remove the state Republican Party chairman at its meeting on Saturday.

Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Christina Karamo refused to resign and was removed by a sizable majority of the members present, said Bree Mogenberg, 2nd District State Committee Chair. according to To Politico.

Karamo did not attend the meeting, saying it was not official and was held illegally. He has previously said he would not recognize the vote if it were to take place and said he would likely take the issue to court, the paper said.

Karamo supporters gathered outside a shooting range in Commerce Township where a rally was held on the day of the vote, the newspaper reported. Republican committee member Barry Dougherty, who claimed he was unable to enter the meeting due to security, maintained that the meeting was not officially called by the Michigan Republican Party. He said any actions taken during the meeting would be illegal, adding that an official meeting would be held next week. “We're here to let people know, as other state board members know, that there will be a public business meeting next week and they can bring their grievances to that meeting.” said Doherty.

According to the newspaper, Doherty said Karamo, who has cast doubt on the results of the 2020 presidential election, has the support of Karamo and those around him.

“I'm concerned that people on the inside aren't aware of that and the good progress that's happening,” Dougherty said.

A week ago, Republican leaders faced pressure from eight of the state party's 13 House district chairs to resign, citing financial instability and a desire to “end the turmoil within the party,” the newspaper reported. It was being hung. The effort to remove Karamo began in December when 39 state board members signed a petition calling for a special meeting.
