‘I’m On Her Team’: Fmr GOP Rep Expresses Fear His 5-Year-Old Might Have To Live Through Second Trump Term

Former Republican Rep. David Jolly expressed concern on MSNBC on Wednesday that his 5-year-old daughter might have to live through a second term for former President Donald Trump.

Appearing on Deadline: The White House, Jolie spoke with MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace about how Harris' campaign is gaining momentum as new polls in battleground states show her leading Trump. She criticized Trump as “divisive” and said her daughter says she's on Harris' “team,” but that she “doesn't know why.” (Related: CNN reporter Harry Enten warns Harris campaign that Trump's growing popularity means he'll be “hard to unseat”

“That's what makes this situation puzzling for Donald Trump. There are enough people who see the former president as divisive, who feel tired of him, who don't agree with his values, and who see the threat to democracy as real. But there's also a coalition that understands that this is 2024, not 2016, and that under a Biden-Harris administration, there hasn't been any dramatic progressive change in this country,” Jolly said. “Instead, there's been an effort to build an economy that works for all, to ensure health care and education for all, and to represent America on the world stage with integrity and strength. They'll look at that and say, 'I don't know what ideology this is, but I'm not particularly offended by it, but fundamentally, I think the problem is Donald Trump.'”

Jolly represented Florida's 13th congressional district before announcing her departure from the Republican Party in 2018. According to Jolly, who is active in Florida politics, has been openly critical of Trump and the Republican Party's support for the former president since President Trump took office, and said in 2018 that she thought Democrats should take control of the House of Representatives.

“I told her last week that my 5-year-old daughter said, 'I'm team her,' and she didn't know why. She just saw it. And I'll tell you the excuse, Nicole. I was sitting around a table with Brian Williams in 2017 or 2018, and my daughter had just been born, and I said I wanted Donald Trump gone before she was old enough to know who the president was. And we are an American family going through that right now. We don't want to introduce our kids, our young kids, to Donald Trump. Because of their age, they have a chance. They have a chance to experience President Harris and not President Trump. This is a reflection of millions of Americans who don't want Donald Trump to be the leader of this country.”

Kamala Harris has gained significant momentum since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee and is currently leading Trump in key battleground states, according to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll. The poll, released Saturday, shows Harris leading Trump 50% to 46% in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, three states that are crucial to Trump's chances of winning in 2024.
