A Spanish-language Facebook group has been tracking federal immigration enforcement activities in Washington, D.C., amid tightening measures by the Trump administration. The President has noted a drop in crime since federal law enforcement increased its presence in the city earlier this month, effectively requiring local police to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ICE agents are reportedly feeling anxious in the area, while DMV Noticias, a local Facebook group focused on the D.C. metro area, has been posting suspected sightings of immigration agents. The group’s name translates to “DMV News,” reflecting its focus on user-generated content and information about events in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions. There’s also a plan for a Spanish-language website that occasionally updates followers about current events and traffic incidents.
A Homeland Security official expressed concern for ICE personnel, noting they are experiencing a staggering rise in assaults. The official commented on threats made against ICE officers, stating there would be a strong response to anyone who obstructs or attacks law enforcement.
Attempts to contact DMV Noticias for comment went unanswered, both through email and phone calls.
Local Facebook groups have taken initiative in documenting immigration enforcement efforts. On one recent Friday, the group shared various posts, including pictures of Border Patrol activities and descriptions of individuals being apprehended. One post even detailed an incident in which three individuals were taken into custody near Riverdale Park, Maryland.
With around 200,000 followers, the group has been prolific, posting about 20 times concerning local immigration enforcement in just one day. Their profile claims they cover everything from news and celebrity gossip to updates in the DMV area.
The group’s emergence coincides with the Trump administration’s increased focus on law enforcement in D.C., spurred by an executive order from Attorney General Pam Bondy, which mandates local police to fully cooperate with ICE. This initiative has reportedly led to a notable reduction in crime rates, with data showing as much as a 33% decline in 2023 compared to previous years.
In July, the acting director of ICE criticized a popular tracking app for allegedly endangering law enforcement. Similarly, DHS has made it clear that they will not hesitate to act against anyone impeding enforcement activities.
