Iowa man pleads guilty to sending death threats to Arizona election official

An Iowa man pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to charges of threatening then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brunovich and election officials for the Maricopa County Oversight Board in 2021.

Age 64, according to the FBI Mark Rissi left a voicemail to Clint Hickman at the Supervisory Board meeting on September 27, 2021where he threatened to kill him.

“Hello Mr. Hickman. I’m glad you want to stand up for democracy, put your hands on the Bible and say the election was honest and fair,” Rishi said in a voicemail. When we lynch your ridiculously lying Commie [expletive]you will remember that you lied [expletive] Bible, part of you [expletive]you’re gonna die, part of you [expletive]We’re going to hang you we’re going to hang you

The FBI said Rissi left a similar voicemail to Brnovich on Dec. 8, 2021, falsely claiming the 2020 election was rigged.

“Do your job, Brnovic, or you’ll hang out with them [expletive] Finally,” Rishi said in part of a voicemail message. [expletive]. Do your job. “

According to the FBI, Rissi pleaded guilty to two counts of making threatening interstate communications and is expected to be sentenced on June 26.

Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr., along with the Department of Justice, emphasized the need to prosecute cases involving threats of violence against election officials.

“Public officials who administer elections, the most fundamental aspect of our democracy, must be free from unlawful threats to perform their duties,” Polite said. “As today’s guilty plea demonstrates, our Election Intimidation Task Force, working with partners across the country, will continue to hold those who unlawfully blackmail election officials accountable.”
