Missing Former ASU Student Found
Update: Janelle Banda was located safe on June 16th.
After a tense few days, Janelle Banda, a former ASU student, has been found. She was last seen at a campsite between Flagstaff and Sedona on the night of June 13th.
The area, known for its stunning scenery, poses challenges due to its abrupt drop-offs, adding complexity to the search efforts.
Her father spoke about the ordeal, describing it as a nightmare for their family. Janelle had left the campsite around 10:30 PM for reasons that remain unclear. Authorities reported that she was dressed in dark jogging pants and a black and white hooded sweatshirt.
“It feels like a piece of our heart is missing, and we just want her back,” her father, David Bunda, shared.
Located on a ridge called the “edge of the world,” the campsite overlooks Bear Sign Canyon, amplifying worries about her safety.
“It’s such a beautiful spot. We really had a great time with Janelle, but it’s also incredibly dangerous. People need to be aware and take all necessary precautions,” David added.
Janelle’s mother, Mercy Steckel, emphasized that while her daughter isn’t an avid camper, she enjoys outdoor activities like hiking.
Mercy expressed, “It’s not that she was always camping, but she loved getting outside.” The Coconino Sheriff’s Office and family members have worked tirelessly in their search for Janelle, hoping to raise awareness about her situation.
“Her character is truly special, and I say that not just because she’s my daughter. She’s a wonderful friend to many,” Mercy mentioned.
David continued, “The feeling of having someone so close go missing is just awful. It’s hard not knowing what’s happened.”
