Jasmine Crockett Calls for Democrats to Expand the Supreme Court if They Regain Control During Intense Speech

Texas Democrat Calls for Supreme Court Expansion

During the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF) on August 7, Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett suggested that the Supreme Court should prepare for changes. She spoke out after the party’s discussions on August 6 about potential expansions for Puerto Rico and the Columbia district, aiming for a more unified control by 2028.

In a recent address, Crockett emphasized the need for Democrats to act decisively when they gain control. “It’s not enough to just stop doing harm; we have to create positive change,” she remarked, referring to the current political landscape. Her words hinted at the urgency and stakes for the party moving forward.

“I want them to be bold,” she continued, advocating for expanded voting rights and ethics reforms within the Supreme Court. “If people can’t vote, then what rights do they really have?” She pointed out that the obstacles in Texas are partly due to the failure to pass important legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

There is concern among Democrats that Texas’ proposed redistricting plan could grant Republicans additional seats in the House of Representatives. Crockett expressed frustration, saying, “We’ve allowed them to manipulate the Supreme Court situation.” Her remarks reflect a feeling of helplessness regarding the current judicial makeup.

The proposed map has drawn strong opposition from Democrats, who believe it threatens democracy. An advocate for bold measures within the Democratic Party contended that such approaches are crucial for preserving democratic values.

Despite this, recent polling indicates that only 29% of Americans support expanding the Supreme Court, as highlighted by a study from the Annenberg Public Policy Center. Both President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris have been hesitant when it comes to endorsing court expansion, with Biden ultimately stepping back from this during his presidency.
