Jefferson County Commission invests $2 million in Coca-Cola’s next Birmingham expansion

On Thursday morning, the Jefferson County Commission passed a $2 million resolution to support Coca-Cola United's new campus in Birmingham's Kingston neighborhood, which will provide economic development assistance for the rehabilitation of the Coca-Cola site.

Once renovations are complete, the site will become the new home for Coca-Cola Bottling Company's distribution operations in Birmingham.

The total investment for the project is $335 million and will create 50 new jobs and sustain more than 750 jobs in Jefferson County. Located in Kingston near the Birmingham Airport, the new facility will be highly visible from landing planes and traffic along Interstate 20/59.

“On behalf of the Kingston Neighborhood Association, we are excited to welcome Coca-Cola United to our community,” said Brenda Holifield, association president.

According to a Coca-Cola United press release, the new facility will include a 150,000-square-foot, multi-story office building and a 300,000-square-foot warehouse.

The warehouse is equipped with the Vertique case-picking system, the most advanced in the beverage industry.

“Our story began in Birmingham more than 120 years ago, and this investment will ensure our story continues for years to come,” Mike Sko, president and CEO of Coca-Cola United, said in a press release.

“Today's announcement reflects our longstanding commitment to our employees, customers and the communities we serve. Strong relationships have brought us to this defining moment in our history, and we'd like to thank our local and state officials and partners for supporting our continued success,” Suko said.
