Kimmel’s Return and Controversy
Jimmy Kimmel has finally expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump and his administration. Ironically, he’s a late-night host who hasn’t lost millions of employers. Perhaps he’s more of a hero in the liberal resistance and an activist, though it’s a bit awkward to label him that way.
Kimmel will be making his come-back to ABC on Tuesday night after a brief suspension. His show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, went dark on September 17 due to problematic remarks he made about Charlie Kirk’s situation. Before ABC pulled the plug, Nexstar Media Group, a major player in television, indicated they would withdraw his show from their affiliates because they found Kimmel’s comments to be “aggressive and insensitive.”
Meanwhile, some folks argue they never truly cared about free speech, pointing out the previous censorship of Americans questioning vaccine effectiveness or pandemic origins. Still, they think Kimmel’s suspension highlights a more significant authoritarian trend. The Federal Communications Commission Chair, Brendan Kerr, stirred the pot after discussing the issue on a podcast. It’s a complicated situation for Disney; they might have to tread carefully regarding Kimmel.

Conservatives are stepping up in Kimmel’s defense. Yes, he has the right to say what he wants, but his employer has the right to let him go if his views aren’t in line with their brand. Not to mention, some Republicans, like Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, have been vocal critics of the Trump administration’s actions here. It’s quite blatant to them.
Kimmel seems to be in a bit of a paradox. His show has been losing traction for years, and maybe it wouldn’t even be surprising if he faces cancellation soon. After all, he’s become somewhat less relevant over time; it just feels like a downward spiral.
After years of complaining about the cancellation culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by threatening media companies, unless it hears the reporters, firefighters, and commentators they dislike.
Looking at the situation with Charlie Kirk post-incident, his popularity seems to have soared. Social media engagement for him and Turning Point USA has blown up on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. If the goal was to curb his influence, it didn’t quite pan out.
There’s something odd about how tragedy can sometimes amplify a person’s message. When someone feels marginalized or attacked, it can paradoxically elevate their status a bit. It’s human nature. Much like when a child is told not to touch something forbidden; curiosity often drives them to seek it out even more.
Unfortunately for many, Kimmel might find a resurgence in his career, despite some seeing him as unfunny or overly righteous. In the end, maybe this aligns him perfectly with his new role—an unlikely resistance figure. Despite everything, he does seem to fit that bill.
