President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to a White House press release.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed in a press release that Biden had tested positive for the virus, saying “he has received both his vaccination shots and a booster dose and is experiencing mild symptoms.”
“Earlier today, following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19,” Jean-Pierre said. “The President has returned to Delaware and is self-isolating, during which time he will continue to perform his full duties. The White House will provide regular updates on the President's status as he continues to perform his full duties while in quarantine.”
The president was scheduled to speak at a Las Vegas conference of Latino civil rights group UnidosUS, CNN reported. reportBut speaking to the attendees, Murguia said Biden had called the CEO to express his “deep disappointment” that he couldn't attend. “I just spoke with President Biden on the phone and he expressed his deep disappointment that he will not be able to be with us this afternoon. The president has been attending a number of events as we all know, and he has tested positive for COVID-19,” Murguia said.
The White House also included a note from Biden's doctor in a press release saying Biden had “upper respiratory symptoms, including runny nose, dry cough and general fatigue” on Wednesday afternoon. Biden said he felt “fine” at the initial event, but his condition worsened as the day went on, leading doctors to test him for COVID-19.
The president is self-isolating in accordance with CDC guidelines and has reportedly received his first dose of Paxlovir. The White House confirmed that the president is isolating at his home in Rehoboth, Delaware.
