John Wahl: Trump verdict a ‘horrible precedent that we have set as a nation’

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wall is concerned about the future of the country in the wake of the conviction of former President Donald Trump.

A New York jury on Thursday found Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, marking the first time in American history that a former president has been convicted of a crime.

President Trump has been ordered to appear in court again on July 11 to be sentenced.

Wall spoke about the sentence on WVNN's “Yaffee Program” on Friday.

“This is a very, very frightening precedent that we've set as a nation,” Wall said. “It basically says, we don't care about the rule of law, we don't care about your cases. And I'm heartbroken by this process, and seeing a judge and a prosecutor who are openly biased, who acknowledge their bias, and yet they still go forward. This is a landmark decision, it's the first we've ever seen.”

Wall said it's clear the lawsuit is politically motivated against the Republican presidential candidate.

“The bottom line is that the American people are now asking themselves: was this trial, this case in particular, politically motivated? I believe the answer is yes, and I think most Americans believe it is,” he argued. “We live in a free society. We are a constitutional republic. And as a people and as a country, it is imperative that we respect our democratic electoral process. And in order to truly respect that, we have to keep the justice system and politics separate. And what we've seen here is not only a blurring of the line, but Democratic elected officials completely crossing that line. And we have prosecutors and judges playing political games and using their positions of power to influence political outcomes. And that's not appropriate in a free society.”

Republican leaders debated what the party should do next in the wake of the ruling.

“Well, I think there's two main things we have to do,” he explained. “We have to speak out boldly on this. We have to really explain it because I hope the American people will look below the surface. They'll see the same thing. And I think the polls over the next few weeks will tell us whether they see this through to the end. But I think it's essential that Republicans, conservatives, speak up and explain why this sentence was inappropriate.”

He also said Republicans need to push for real reform of the justice system to ensure this never happens again.

“I think this highlights the need for justice reform,” he said, “and I want to see the Republican Party follow through on that in the long run. I want us to be the party that says, 'Look, everybody has the right to a fair trial,' and I want the Republican Party to be the party that advocates for real justice reform and ensures that everybody's Fourth Amendment, Fifth Amendment, Sixth Amendment rights are protected in this legal system. We should be the party that advocates for reform and makes sure that the rule of law is upheld in every case across this country.”

ALGOP Chairman Wall also said: Formal statement Thursday after the verdict.

“It is the American people who decide who will be our next president, not Democratic elected officials or politically motivated prosecutions,” Wall said.
