The Johnson County Government is pleased to announce Julie Cullins as Deputy Mayor after a months-long search. Her first day in the county is Monday, February 27th.
Karins will assume her new role, replacing Maury Thompson, who left Johnson County in November 2022. She oversees multiple departments and agencies to ensure effective and efficient delivery of programs and services to residents. She also serves as county mayor in the absence of Penny Post Oak Ferguson.

Karins comes to Johnson County with 23 years of local government experience at both the county and city levels, 12 of which were at the head of her organization. Her most recent position was City Manager in Goodyear, Arizona. Arizona is her ninth fastest growing community in the country.
She also served as Deputy Mayor of Peoria, Arizona and County Administrator of Yavapai County, Arizona, and began her public service career as Director of Human Resources and Risk Management for Yavapai County.

Karins has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and is an ICMA Certified Manager. Under her leadership, the City of Goodyear has accomplished major capital projects such as a new recreational her campus, two fire stations, City Hall with a library, and brought her more than 11,000 jobs to the community.
Before her 23-year public service career, Karins worked in the private sector for 7 years as a Human Resources Assistant Director or Director. Her many skills include building relationships, reaching consensus, and solving problems with sound judgment.
Karins has three adult children who live in the Kansas City subway and are thrilled to be living here together.
