Joy Behar Interrupts Fellow Co-Host Who Claimed Trump Attempted To ‘Woo Black Voters’ At NABJ Event

“The View” co-host Joy Behar on Thursday interrupted Sara Haines when she said Republican candidate Donald Trump tried to “win over black voters” at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) meeting.

Trump appeared on stage Wednesday for a hostile 36-minute interview with hosts ABC News' Rachel Scott, Semaphore's Kadia Goba and Fox News' Harris Faulkner, during which he was questioned about his past comments on race and gender, particularly regarding Vice President Kamala Harris. After Haines said the Republican candidate was courting black voters at events, Behar quickly interrupted her, claiming that Trump appeared to be appealing to racialized voters.

“He's showing up at these Black events and saying the most offensive things to try to gain support from Black voters,” Haynes said.

“I don't agree with that. I don't think that was his motivation,” Behar interjected.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg joked that Trump “can tell you where all the black jobs are,” referring to comments that black and Hispanic unemployment rates have fallen during his presidency. The Hispanic American unemployment rate hit a record low of 3.9%, while the African-American unemployment rate hit a record low of 5.5% in September 2019 during Trump's presidency. according to To CNBC.

Haines continued to argue that Trump's appearance would likely lose votes rather than gain them support, while Behar said Trump was “trying to send a signal to his base” to rally racist support.

“My point is, he was really acting for his base right now. It was a signal to his base,” Behar said.

“No, he's bragging,” Haynes began, but Goldberg interrupted him. (RELATED: 'Morning Joe' panel claims Trump is reverting to 'old racist tricks' as he nearly loses election)

Behar also claimed that Trump is intimidated by being interviewed by a black woman and is “terrified” of debating Vice President Kamala Harris. Co-host Sunny Hostin defended Haines, agreeing that the former president was trying to court black voters.

“The other thing is, I think Obama was trying to appeal to black voters,” Hostin said, “because he lied and said, 'I was the best president for black people since Abraham Lincoln.' He also claimed to have saved historically black colleges and universities, but he said Obama had just done that and just signed off on the continued funding.”

Trump came under fire during the NABJ event for saying he didn't know Harris was a Black woman and claiming she has always identified as Indian. At the start of the event, Scott accused Trump of attacking him in a “nasty way” after he asked him about his past comments about former President Barack Obama, several Black district attorneys and former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

The event sparked outrage among black journalists and public figures, with Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah resigning as NABJ co-chair just hours before the interview took place. The event's third moderator, Fox News' Harris Faulkner, spoke to NABJ on Thursday, saying the media was using race to “divide” the country.
