Katie Britt tells Biden administration to ‘restore order and protect Jewish students on our college campuses’

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is fighting to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitism on college campuses.

Britt, along with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) and 24 other Republican senators, sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona urging them to end the violence currently occurring at several major universities across the country.

“Action must be taken to restore order on college campuses and protect Jewish students. President Biden issued a statement on Sunday condemning the outbreak of anti-Semitism. If that statement is serious, the departments must act immediately,” the senators wrote. “Rioting violates federal law. Committing violence or attempting violence against someone because of their Jewish ancestry violates federal law. School administrators' failure to protect Jewish students from discrimination or harassment violates federal law and is grounds for the school to lose federal funding. Advocating support for terrorist groups such as Hamas violates federal immigration law and is grounds for deportation.”

The following Senators are also in the running: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-VA), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-DA), Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA). The letter was also signed by Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), John Hoeven (R-Dakota), Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin), John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), James Risch (R-Idaho), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska), Rick Scott (R-Florida), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), John Thawne (R-Dakota), and Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina).

Britt also introduced the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which would require the U.S. Department of Education to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) interim definition of anti-Semitism when enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws.

“Now more than ever, we must send a clear message that anti-Semitism has no place in America. Make no mistake: 'Never Again' is now, and not just abroad,” Britt said. “Whether on college campuses or on the streets of our nation's biggest cities, there are alarming numbers of people who are unable or unwilling to distinguish between right and evil, while extremists chant 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel,' and even engage in explicitly pro-Hamas refrains and calls for the extermination of Jewish people.”

The senator said immigrants who support terrorist groups should be deported to their countries of origin.

“Let me be clear: any foreign national who supports Hamas in the United States should be immediately deported, and any U.S. educational institution that authorizes, promotes or supports terrorist-supportive activities should lose all federal funding and subsidies,” she said. “I am proud to stand with my Jewish brothers and sisters in Alabama, across the country and abroad.”

The Anti-Semitism Awareness Act was introduced by Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), James Lankford (R-OK), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rick Scott (R-FL), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Boozman (R-AR), Christopher Coons (D-DE), Susan Collins (R-MA), and others. Co-sponsors include Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (R-Ariz.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Kristen Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), Pete Ricketts (R-Nevada), and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Joe Manchin (D-Virginia), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Maggie Hassan (D-Houston), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-Virginia).
