As a fertility specialist with 30 years of experience, I want to help more couples experience the joy of parenthood. With in vitro fertilization (In Vitro Fertilization).
And as a staunch Republican and conservative Texan and proud supporter of former President Donald Trump, I urge members of the Republican National Committee (RNC) Platform Committee to adopt language in support of IVF, especially as the issue has come under intense scrutiny in recent months. Republican Policy at the upcoming Republican National Convention.
The new scrutiny of IVF has been driven by bipartisan politics in an election year. Alabama Supreme Court decision IVF bills are forcing even family-oriented lawmakers to consider misguided regulations that could severely limit or eliminate this life-affirming treatment option for infertile couples. As a Republican and an industry leader in this field, I can tell you this would be a huge mistake for the Republican Party.
First, IVF, like Republican policies, is inherently pro-life and pro-family. I have helped thousands of families conceive, and I can say with confidence that no couple goes through this process without a strong desire to become parents, to have a family, and to pass on our shared values to the next generation. What better way to support American families and future generations than by supporting these life-giving therapies?
Remember that infertility is a medical condition Make an impact Infertility affects one in eight reproductive-age couples in the United States, affecting more than 10 million people. As Republicans, we will not hesitate to support people with conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Infertility is more complicated than diabetes, but it is curable with medical intervention.
Second, Trump Said He is a “strong supporter of the availability of IVF” and has called on lawmakers to take action to protect IVF in the wake of the Alabama ruling. As a political party, what better message can we send to the American people than a simple policy statement that we wholeheartedly support the life-giving treatment that IVF provides and the beautiful babies it helps mothers bring into the world?
As a result of Trump's support, all 49 Republicans in the Senate Signed the resolution New bill introduced in House of Representatives in support of IVF sponsor Republican Rep. Lori Chavez DeRemer of Oregon and Republican Rep. Zach Nunn of Iowa recently withdrew a bill that would have made IVF more accessible nationwide.
I serve on the board of directors of an organization called the American IVF Association, and polls show that an overwhelming majority of Republicans and conservatives are opposed to IVF. Christian I support IVF. The numbers are shockingly positive.
So with President Trump, both houses of Congress, and the overwhelming majority of Republicans supporting this treatment, we shouldn't have to face a lot of backlash, but unfortunately, we are going to see some backlash.
Some of it is down to the clickbait-hungry media crowd that tries to turn almost every issue Trump discusses into a scandal, and some of it has to do with the insidious lies that have been invented about the IVF process.
Opponents of IVF are often driven by fervent beliefs but are erroneous or ignorant. Some have outright theological opposition to IVF, which may motivate them to seek unjustified restrictions.
Contrary to what some may believe, natural conception is inherently inefficient, with young, childbearing women only having a 15-20% chance of conceiving each month. In other words, the vast majority of natural menstrual cycles end in failed attempts to conceive. Factors like egg quality, sperm quality, and uterine health all play a role, and chances of success decrease significantly with age.
With IVF, just like in nature, many of the eggs collected fail to produce a viable embryo. IVF replicates the natural process of conception, but incredible advances in science have increased the pregnancy rate from 15% in nature to over 60% in one IVF cycle.
Myths about IVF, such as that fertility drugs are carcinogenic or that they inadvertently destroy embryos, must be debunked. Advances such as preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) mean that multiple embryos are no longer needed to increase conception rates.
This technique increases pregnancy rates, reduces miscarriages, and nearly eliminates the risks associated with multiple pregnancies. With PGT and other laboratory advances, more than 90% of IVF cycles in the United States now involve the transfer of only one embryo.
Contrary to other claims, IVF is not a “lawless land.” It is heavily regulated on multiple levels, and IVF labs are subject to random inspections by organizations like the College of American Pathologists and the Food and Drug Administration. Practitioners are required by law to collect and report extensive data annually to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and face fines for failure to do so.
Additional restrictions could limit access to IVF, prevent infertile couples from having children and prevent the birth of thousands of babies each year.
Some bad actors in the Democratic Party and mainstream media are already trying to make the pro-life issue of IVF their own, and debating the issue in Milwaukee will only make it more obscure.
The truth is that IVF is a miraculous medical procedure that enables millions of people suffering from infertility to achieve their dream of becoming parents.
At the Republican National Convention, I urge the Republican National Committee to protect the rights of infertile couples and promote family growth by endorsing sensible platform language that upholds the pro-life, pro-family, pro-IVF Republican Party position.
