Graham County – The most common but preventable disease is tooth decay. Nationwide, children miss more than 50 million hours of school each year because of tooth decay. Statistics show that children and adolescents are twice as likely to have tooth decay in underserved families compared to higher-income families, due to a lack of education about the importance of oral hygiene. Greenlee County has the lowest percentage of children with a dental check-up in the past year.

Tooth BUDDS (Bringing Awareness of Dental Diseases to Schools) is working with local communities to combat these problems and ensure that children in rural Southern Arizona receive free professional dental cleanings at their schools. was founded by Mikel McRae, a dental hygienist in
