QUARTZITE, Ariz. (AP) – A La Paz County sheriff's sergeant was struck and killed by a vehicle following a pursuit near the Arizona-California border, authorities said Monday.
According to sheriff's officials, Sgt. Michael Ladd got out of his car and then collided head-on with a commercial vehicle along Interstate 10.
Rudd was rushed to a hospital in Blythe, California, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will lower flags at all statehouses to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Wednesday in honor of Rudd, who was promoted to sergeant in March and has served in La Paz County since 2013. I ordered it to be lowered.
Quartzsite police, the La Paz County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety began tracking the suspected fraud scheme shortly after midnight Monday, and the investigation ended about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Quartzsite.
Authorities said the pursuit suspect was taken into custody while the driver of the commercial vehicle remained at the scene. Their names were not immediately released.
DPS officials said the department's Vehicle Crimes Unit is investigating the fatal crash.
