LANE: Biden’s SAVE 2.0 Is Less About Loan Forgiveness, More About Saving Face

It's another Groundhog Day for the Biden administration, but the only shadow looming large is the latest failed attempt at student loan forgiveness.

This is the second time in less than a year that President Biden has single-handedly canceled student loan payments for thousands of borrowers. Like the previous plan, which was ultimately ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, Biden's latest proposal was implemented without a single debate, hearing, or vote in Congress.

Making a bad situation even worse, as Biden's grip on young voters loosens, his latest debt cancellation plan has surfaced and could be a stepping stone for Biden to join Team Trump in 2024. There is. Young voters abandon Biden Trump has an advantage among voters under 35 in his re-election bid.

So why would we once again tread this path that is almost certain to end up in a court system where this policy is likely to fail?

This is a calculated move to save face among young voters ahead of the election.

Biden's decline in popularity among young voters didn't happen overnight. It has gradually declined throughout his presidential term.

Among the issues, young voters feel disappointed on several fronts, particularly his perceived inaction on climate change and his failure to solidify Roe v. Wade at the federal level. One example is that there is no such thing. Furthermore, what is impressive is that 70 percent of voters People under 35 disapprove of how Biden has handled the Israel-Hamas war.

But much of the dissatisfaction among young voters stems from Biden's first initiative, student loan forgiveness. His effort to cut off loans to more than 40 million borrowers in 2023 was more than just an attempt to keep a campaign promise; it became a keystone of trust between Biden and young voters.

The collapse of these efforts and the unfavorable Supreme Court ruling not only created a sense of betrayal among young voters. This significantly narrows the scope of Biden's future actions on student loan forgiveness.

Join Biden's SAVE Plan.under SAVE framework, a borrower's total monthly loan payment is determined based on income, potentially reducing payments to zero for thousands of low-income people. Additionally, SAVE plans to offer borrowers a faster path to full debt forgiveness.

Unfortunately, like Biden's first attempt, the SAVE plan treads on thin constitutional ice. After all, Congress holds the purse strings, leaving the executive branch to control spending.

This separation of powers is not lost on leaders within Biden's own party.Take, for example, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. Nancy Pelosi's 2021 Statements: “People think the President of the United States can forgive debts. He can't. He may defer or delay, but the power to cancel debts lies with Congress.”

Also consider those who didn't go to college at all and chose a different path, or who saved up to graduate debt-free. Why should these millions of people bear the financial burden of educating others, especially when many of these graduates are likely to earn more than them in their lifetime?

Asking them, or taxpayers, to subsidize someone else's education is not only illogical, it's completely unfair.

It seems likely that the SAVE plan will have the same outcome as Biden's first attempt at student loan forgiveness, but what is Biden concerned about? She just needs to hold out until November.

If the president really wants to solve the student debt crisis, he will tackle a bigger, fundamental problem: the unreasonable rise in the cost of education. But that's not the real purpose of his SAVE plan.

In 2020, Biden narrowly won over young voters. 24 point margin It operates on a platform that includes debt forgiveness. And Republicans haven't won the youth vote since Ronald Reagan.

The SAVE plan is a lifeline to Mr. Biden's political fortunes, a political strategy that likely cannot be sustained through voter monitoring or under the law.
