Progressive voters in Wisconsin expressed frustration on Thursday's episode of “Morning Joe” with how Vice President Kamala Harris has become the de facto Democratic nominee.
President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race on Sunday and endorsed Harris, who was running on an internal party ballot, received virtually no support in the primary and enough support from Democratic delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee early Tuesday. Voters told NBC political analyst Elise Jordan that they weren't happy with the way the selection process was unfolding but still intended to vote for the vice president in November's election. “Well, I wish he'd made this decision a year ago so he could have had a primary and decided who to replace him instead of everyone flocking to Kamala Harris,” one male voter said.
“I'm not saying Kamala Harris will lose by sweeping the candidates to ensure Biden wins and prevent an actual democratic primary from taking place, but I think we would have benefited greatly if he had realized this earlier, which would have given us more time for intraparty debate and intraparty democracy,” said another male voter.
Jordan then asked voters about their perceptions and expectations of Harris, eliciting a range of responses from the panel.
“I don't feel like I know her that well. I agree that Biden wished he'd made this decision sooner, but given the current situation I think it's the best thing for the party,” said another male voter, adding that he felt “hopeful” when asked if he felt Jordan had become “more active.”
“I feel like I'm being revitalized. I don't like the process. This conversation starts as if there's someone behind closed doors, behind curtains, making decisions for us, and it's supposed to be a process,” one female voter said. “We're supposed to be a part of it, so I don't like that part in principle. That being said, she was vice president, and we're late to the game, so by picking Biden, we would have elected her president. That's why she's there. If he was president and something happened, she would have been president. I hope to God. I think what she brings is fresh. She was in the presidency for four years, so she may not have a network, but she knows the network. She knows the people involved.”
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten warned on Tuesday that Harris, whose popularity has grown since the Republican National Convention and who survived an assassination attempt, will have a “tough time” beating Trump.
A separate panel of female Trump supporters from Wisconsin expressed doubts about Harris' intelligence and competence during a segment aired on “Morning Joe” on Wednesday.
“I don't really understand her,” said one voter, while another named Mary said, “I think she's stupid.”
Doug Shawn, an adviser to former President Bill Clinton, also said Tuesday he had problems with the process.
“I have an issue with the process that was put in place to approve her nomination so quickly. There was no mini-primary, there was no open convention,” Shawn said. “Basically the deal was done in 48 hours. I have an issue with that.”
