Lincoln Project Co-Founder Doubles Down On ‘Bullet In Donald Trump’ Comment After Assassination Attempt

Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson on Tuesday repeated comments he made in 2015 that the “donor class” is “going to have to put a bullet in Donald Trump” despite Saturday's assassination attempt on the former president.

Wilson made the remarks in October 2015 in the context of arguing that Republican donors needed to destroy the Trump campaign and back a stronger candidate to beat Hillary Clinton. according to “I'm not a Republican,” Wilson said Tuesday, according to a transcript of MSNBC's “All In with Chris Hayes.”Rick Wilson's “Enemy List”The president said the phrase was merely a “figure of speech” and that he had told people they should not give up on confronting Trump because the assassination attempt does not make him a noble man. “Hundreds of other MAGA commentators and social media types and peddlers of fraud have attacked me, saying, 'Oh, you said before that donors had to put bullets in Trump'. Folks, there's a difference between metaphor and rhetoric,” he said. “Followers, please don't run from the confrontation about Trump. Please don't run from the fight. He's not a martyr. He's not a saint. He's not a good man. He's not a great man. I'm glad he's alive. I thank God he's alive. I'm so, so grateful that divine providence spared his life. I can't thank him enough. I think this country was fundamentally broken.”

President Joe Biden called for America to “de-escalate politically” after the assassination attempt, but became defensive when pressed about his comments by NBC News host Lester Holt.

Kate Bedingfield, President Biden's White House communications director, on Monday corrected and apologized for saying Democrats must choose to “win this election and go on the offensive against Donald Trump.”

“At some point, Democrats have to decide they're going to win this election and go on the offensive against Donald Trump,” she said. “I think so. I shouldn't have said 'go on the offensive,' sorry. That's not the word I meant. They need to shift their focus to Donald Trump.”
