Proposed Tax for New Prison in Cochise County
Bisbee, Arizona — Voters in Cochise County will decide on a proposed semi-cent tax to fund a new prison in November.
The topic of prisons has generated considerable discussion lately, touching upon elections, legal challenges, and recent court decisions.
On Thursday, officials visited the proposed site, which is located mere feet from the current 40-year-old prison.
In July, the Board of Supervisors stated that the new facility would essentially be constructed in the same area as the existing one, pending voter approval.
Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dunnell mentioned that the project would cost around $130 million, but he believes it’s the best option given the existing resources in the area.
“We have the necessary infrastructure like sewage and water systems in place to support a prison,” Dunnell noted. “Everything is ready to go, except for the new facility.”
The board met with the recently hired construction management company on Thursday.
“This will help us get contractors involved and start the actual construction process, as well as clarify the timeline,” said Frank Antenori, the District 3 manager.
He emphasized the urgency of moving forward but acknowledged that they must await voter approval first.
“I try to push things along as much as possible, drawing on my military experience, but unfortunately, the law limits us,” Antenori explained.
As for the new facility, Dunnell highlighted the importance of providing better mental health services for inmates.
“Our goal isn’t simply to punish; it’s about rehabilitation and reintroducing individuals into society with the right resources,” Dunnell stated.
Regarding the old prison, both the committee and the sheriff concurred that it should be demolished and the site returned to its natural state.
