Louisiana Legislature Passes Bill Banning COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements In Schools

The Louisiana legislature on Thursday voted in favor of a bill that would ban mandatory COVID-19 vaccines in all schools from kindergarten through high school, and the bill will soon be sent to the governor’s desk.

The state legislature passed by an overwhelming majority HB182 This will ban public or private K-12 schools from requiring students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to be eligible for admission. The state Senate passed the bill Thursday with the consent of the House, ready to send it to the desk of Democratic Gov. John Bell Edwards for signature or veto. Edwards has maintained a moderate stance on the issue so far, but has said nothing about whether he will sign the bill. An amendment to the original bill removed the law’s application to public universities.

The bill has been the subject of criticism on social media.

Jennifer Helix, founder of vaccination advocacy group Louisiana Families for Vaccines, said: recommended Lawmakers vote against HB 182 in tweets.
