CBS News announced Tuesday that longtime anchor Norah O'Donnell will step down as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” after the 2024 election.
O'Donnell will take on her new role at the network after serving as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” since 2019. according to “I'm not going to lie,” she told CBS News, adding that she has reportedly signed a new deal with the network to do a “major cross-platform interview special.” according to To Dylan Byers of Puck News.
“We've celebrated five amazing years together. I love what I do and feel so fortunate to work with some of the best journalists and people in the industry,” O'Donnell told staff, according to CBS News. “Together, our team has won an Emmy, a Murrow Award and a duPont Award. We've hosted in-studio during COVID, broadcast from an aircraft carrier to the Middle East and around the world. We've also had the honor of conducting a historic interview with Pope Francis. We've had so much work to be proud of!”
“I've spent 12 years anchoring here at CBS News, dealing with the daily grind of broadcasting and the relentless news cycle, and it was time to do something different. This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and many of us in this industry tend to think of our careers in terms of these important events,” she continued.
According to PAC News, the CBS Evening News may have a temporary replacement anchor following O'Donnell's departure.

According to CBS News, Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News & Stations and CBS Media Ventures, said O'Donnell will be able to do more “big interviews” and “storytelling” in her new role. “Nora will have the time and support to bring many more of the incredible stories she's known for across CBS Networks and Paramount+ programming and distribution. She'll have the real estate and flexibility to land major bookings across numerous platforms, including primetime specials, 60 Minutes and CBS News Sunday Morning,” McMahon told the outlet.
Talks for her new role reportedly began after her interview with Pope Francis in May, according to Pac News. Her show averaged 4.4 million viewers, with just under 600,000 viewers aged 25-54.
