Man shot, killed by Pinal County deputies in Apache Junction

A man was shot dead by Pinal County Sheriff’s Office officers Tuesday following a domestic violence incident at Apache Junction.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as Daniel Burns, 53. Burns barricaded himself in his motorhome trying to escape police, officials said, before setting fire to a separate garage.

The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on Tuesday near Acacia Road and Southern Avenue. Authorities said the sheriff’s office and Apache Junction Police tried to stop Mr. Burns, who began driving “recklessly” in his motorhome after the first domestic violence incident. The sheriff’s office has not released details about what happened in the first incident.

After ramming a marked vehicle at the sheriff’s office, Burns went home and barricaded himself. Authorities said Burns then started a fire in a separate garage that spread to several other buildings.

Officers and agents attempted to negotiate with Burns, at which point the shooting occurred, police sources said. Burns was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. No information was released about the number of shots fired or the number of police officers.

The sheriff’s office said Burns was seen with a knife and a handgun, but did not say if he opened fire.

The sheriff’s office said neighbors of the residential area were evacuated as a precaution.

An investigation was ongoing.
