Maricopa County animal shelter continues free dog adoptions, still over capacity

Phoenix (AZ Family)Maricopa County Animal Care and Control We're extending our adoption special for another week!

MCACC spokeswoman Kim Powell said there were 814 dogs at the shelter as of Tuesday morning, about 200 above capacity.

From now until Sunday, adoption fees are being waived for all dogs, including puppies. All dogs will go home spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Below are photos of three of the hundreds of dogs available for adoption.

This is the final extension of the shelter's “Empty the Shelter” special adoption program, which the shelter is running with no fees waived.

Since the adoption special began, 559 dogs have found new homes, but 677 have also come to the shelter. Powell said the shelter's goal is to have no more than 750 dogs in its care.

MCACC also hopes to place about 30 more dogs up for adoption by the end of the month, for a total of 50 dogs.

Fostering not only keeps dogs out of the shelter and relieves stress, it also frees up kennel space for other dogs, Powell said. By fostering, you can get to know the dog better and find out what it needs for its ideal forever home.

There are three locations you can visit to adopt a dog: one in Mesa and two in Phoenix.

The shelter's website states: Dogs currently available for adoption.
