A nationwide initiative to increase pet adoptions and donations to local animal shelters will be implemented over the next month. The initiative is expected to assist with overcrowded shelters within Maricopa County.
The “Clear the Shelters” initiative supports animal control and assistance in Maricopa County. From September 7th to 8th, the agency will waive fees for all dogs over 6 months old to be removed from shelters.
“We've been holding free adoption events throughout the month of July and like I said, over 1,000 adoptions have been made. They're working,” said Kimberly with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. Powell said.
Powell said both the East Valley and West Valley shelters are over capacity. At the West Valley shelter alone, there are nearly 1,000 lost, surrendered or stray dogs waiting for owners or homes. The facility will only be able to house 640 animals.
