Maricopa County approves $30 million in bonuses for detention officers

Phoenix (Az Family) – Valley detention officers are boosting wages after the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a historic $30 million compensation package to help recruit and maintain.

Pay the county approved package On Wednesday, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Detectives will receive a one-off bonus for three years. Officers with at least 20 years of service can award bonus payments of up to $25,000 in that time frame.

“Since taking office on January 1, it has been a privilege to work with board members. They have shown a real commitment to understanding the challenging situations detainees face,” said Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan. “Recognizing that, the Board has made significant investments to support and strengthen the future of our business.”

The first bonus is paid immediately using vacant savings from the latest fiscal year budget, according to the county. The bonus scale is as follows:

  • Over 20 years = $10,000
  • 15-19 years = $7,500
  • 10-14 years = $5,000
  • 5-9 years = $2,500
  • 0-4 years = $1,500

The board also approved retention bonuses for all detention officers from 2026-2028.

  • 2026: $2,500
  • 2027: $5,000
  • 2028: $7,500

The bonus is subject to an officer employed in the department for one year after payment.

“I thank my colleagues and Sheriff Jerry Sheridan for their commitment to a financially responsible detention officer pay plan that is generous, fair and most importantly, financially responsible,” Chairman Thomas Galvin said in a statement. “When we looked into the countywide budget later this month, we look forward to keeping our promise to work on improved compensation for our agents and dispatchers that we swore.”

Last year, Arizona families reported that the Maricopa County Jail faces a shortage of more than 800 detention officers.
