Maricopa County attorney drops charges against Tyron McAlpin after violent Phoenix police arrest

Footage of Phoenix police violently arresting a disabled black man sparked a nationwide outcry over both the officers’ actions and the fact that the man was charged with assault and resisting arrest.

However, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement Thursday that those charges against Tyrone McAlpin will be dismissed.

“I have pledged to personally review this case, including the extensive video recordings, police reports, and other materials that have been sent to my office,” the statement said. “I have now completed my review and have decided to dismiss all remaining charges against Mr. McAlpin.”

McAlpin was arrested by police on August 19th after receiving a call from a man standing outside a convenience store.

McAlpin, who is deaf and has cerebral palsy, was immediately grabbed by two officers, punched repeatedly and shocked with a Taser. One of them can be heard on body camera footage complaining that he threw a punch and broke his hand.

McAlpin was later charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault and one felony count of resisting arrest, and spent 24 days in jail because he could not afford the $7,500 bail.

This incident happened just a few months after that incident. Department of Justice releases report Phoenix police were found to discriminate against minorities and routinely use excessive force, including disproportionate and deadly force.
