Maricopa County Attorney Mitchell calls DOJ report into Phoenix police politically motivated

The City of Phoenix issued a statement last week saying it looks forward to working with the Department of Justice following the report on police conduct.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell issued a statement Tuesday morning dissenting from the Justice Department’s assessment.

Mitchell said at a news conference that the report was politically motivated. The results revealed that the Phoenix Police Department systematically discriminated against people of color, unhoused people, and others.

Some city council members have mentioned the possibility of the Justice Department assigning a federal monitor to oversee the police department.

Mitchell argues that doing so would weaken local law enforcement.

“The Justice Department report overlooked thousands of cases where our nation’s police officers did the right thing. They arrested the right perpetrator in the right way and took care of those who were harmed. “I gave it my all,” she said.

Mitchell added that he believed the report was riddled with inaccuracies and did not cite any evidence for its claims. Mr. Mitchell is running for re-election as Maricopa County Attorney.
