Chandler, Arizona (AZ Family) — Maricopa County has set a new record for the number of eviction applications filed so far in the first nine months of this year.
The total number of lawsuits filed from January to September was 65,651. This number exceeds the previous record of 62,333 applications filed in 2006. In 2023, there were approximately 61,473 applications over a nine-month period.
The Kyrene Court of Justice is one of the busiest venues for eviction claims, with more than 450 cases filed last month. The courthouse covers parts of Tempe, Ahwatukee and Guadalupe.
“They appear to be in really serious financial trouble,” said Judge Sharon Soles of the Cuillen Judicial District Court.
However, the number of eviction filings in Maricopa County in September was down about 5% to 6% from August numbers.
The total number of infections was 7,537, compared to 7,957 in August.
In Arizona, there is a 5-day grace period after payment is due. If you can’t pay by the deadline, your landlord can file an eviction in court.
After the tenants appear in court, they have nearly a week to leave before officers come and remove them from the premises.
“It’s pretty quick in Arizona,” Soles said.
As more people are forced out, Soles says there are resources available to help. If you or someone you know is suffering, you can visit Numerous resources on Arizona Housing Authority Website.
