Maricopa County said it would “form an advisory board to explore options to bring professional hockey back into the valley and return it to the valley,” according to Sasha Hupka of the Republic of Arizona. Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Galvin said the Coyote’s move to Utah was a “low point.” He hopes, and “the heartbroken fans — can seduce the league to “return to the desert.” The move was announced during the board’s first meeting of the year. Galvin said “already spoke with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who said Bettman “is “in support” working with the county.” Hupka said it is unclear who will serve the body and when will they start talking to the league. Galvin said the committee is “in formation” and “hopefully we will release details soon.” He added that it was “disappointing in all aspects” among Tempe, Arizona’s Lands Division and Coyotes over the failed arena proposal, adding that the county was “well-placed to support.” Galvin: “We don’t own a hockey stadium. This is to promote and convene community leaders to see how to get hockey back” (“Republic of Arizona, 1/6).
