Jewish advocacy groups are condemning the vice-chair of the Maricopa County Republican Party for saying he would lynch Republican Maricopa County Recorder Steven Richer.
Richer shared a video online that showed Shelby Bush making the comments at an event supporting Republican congressional candidate Jerron Davison in March.
In the video, Bush says he supports candidates who run as Christians, and that if Richter, who is Jewish, walks into a room with him, he will lynch him.
The Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Phoenix issued a joint statement condemning the comments.
“ADL Desert and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Phoenix are appalled by these vile remarks,” the statement said. “We call on Mr. Bush to retract his comments and apologize, and we urge the Maricopa County Republican Party to stand against such statements.”
Richter also criticized Bush, saying, “Given the history of that word, it shouldn't be in your vocabulary.”
“This is inappropriate because I know there are people who have acted out,” Richer said. “I know there are people who have made audio calls. So it's really unfortunate. She should know better. I'm sorry that she did that.”
Bush, Maricopa County Republican Chairman Craig Berland and the Arizona Republican Party did not respond to requests for comment.
