A man in custody at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is accused of killing a fellow inmate, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
Muhammad Toure, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Darshaquise Small-Duran, the attorney’s office said.
On Dec. 29, guards at the 4th Street Jail in downtown Phoenix found Touré standing over his unresponsive cellmate, Small Duran, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Small-Duran was taken to a hospital with medical assistance, but died on Jan. 2 from injuries sustained during the assault, the sheriff’s office reported.
The county attorney’s office received charges against Touré on January 9th. Touré remains in custody, according to the sheriff’s office. Touré was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday, according to Maricopa County Superior Court records.
At the time of the attack, Touré was being held on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, according to court records. A trial on those charges is scheduled for Jan. 30, and a murder trial is scheduled for Sept. 18, according to court records.
