Maricopa County officials push safety ahead of busy lake weekends

PHOENIX — Crowds are expected on lakes across Maricopa County this weekend, and officials are urging everyone to stay safe as July 4 approaches.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will patrol the site to ensure compliance with the law, including wearing lifejackets on the lake.

Arizona requires children under the age of 12 to wear life jackets on boats, including floats and other items that pull behind the boat.

“Paddleboards, kayaks, canoes and other non-powered personal watercraft are still required to wear lifejackets,” MCSO Deputy Rob Marske said.

Marske said adults should also wear lifejackets when riding watercraft such as jet skis or being towed behind watercraft such as wakeboards.

Maricopa County officials are sharing safety tips for those heading to the lakes and trails.

On the lake:

  • Never swim alone or leave children unattended near water
  • Avoid distractions while watching children by the water
  • If your child goes missing, always check for water first
  • Please wear a life jacket
  • Protect yourself from UV rays by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • drink a lot of water

On trail:

  • Never hike alone
  • Notify someone if you go hiking in case your cell phone connection fails.
  • Please bring plenty of water and snacks.
  • go on the road
  • do not touch wild animals
