Maricopa County Parks Asking for Small Fee Changes

Proposed Fee Adjustments for Maricopa County Parks

To manage the heightened demand and rising operational costs, the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department is suggesting slight increases to certain park user fees.

Funding for the Parks

The funding for daily operations—like utilities, wildfire management, repair work, habitat conservation, maintenance of facilities, staffing, and trail upkeep—primarily comes from user fees. These fees help create an operational fund that is crucial for keeping the park safe, clean, and accessible for everyone.

Details of the Proposal

By aligning the fees with those of other large park systems, the department believes it can better preserve natural resources, improve the visitor experience, and ensure the park system is adaptable to the needs of the local community.

Jennifer Waller, the director of Maricopa County Parks and Recreation, expressed gratitude for the board’s support of park projects but emphasized that recent evaluations have shown the current fee structure is insufficient to cover essential services and maintenance. This shortfall could jeopardize the park’s quality and sustainability.

New Fee Schedule

Below is the proposed fee schedule, which will be rolled out in stages over the next three years.

Staff are aware that raising fees isn’t usually welcomed, and changes can be challenging. They are, however, dedicated to keeping options as affordable as possible. While annual pass prices might increase, discounts will still be available for seniors and disabled veterans. Plus, every paid entry includes a free outdoor education program, with a specific free admission day on Fall Selection Day.

Public Input Opportunity

The Supervisory Committee will meet on December 10th, 2025, for anyone wishing to share their thoughts on the proposed fee schedule. This meeting will take place at Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Auditor, 85003, 301 W. Jefferson, Phoenix, Arizona. If approved, the first phase of the new fee schedule will begin on January 1, 2026.
