Maricopa County planning new West Valley animal shelter

Glendale, Ariz. – A new West Valley Maricopa County Animal Control (MCACC) shelter is ongoing, county officials have confirmed.

The MCACC confirmed in May that ABC15 was working on a new shelter to serve the western part of the valley.

The 2026 interim budget allocated $10 million to the location of the new shelter near 99th Avenue and Northern Avenue in Glendale. There is no timetable for when the new facility will open.

With more space and resource needs, MCACC hopes new shelters will reduce the time to deal with animals in need.

The current West Valley Shelter is located near 27th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road in Phoenix.

After opening a new location in Glendale, officials say the location of the 27th Avenue/lower Buckeye shelter will be home to MCSO mash unithowever, they introduce an agreement that if the MCACC needs space for the kennel there, the space can be used.

MCACC announced its new East Valley Shelter in Mesa about a year ago. The new West Valley facility reportedly is modeled after the new East Valley facility.

The MCACC is one of several animal shelters and rescues around the valley, working to upgrade facilities and care for more and more animals.

The Arizona Humane Society opened a new Papago Park campus last year near Loop 202 and Van Buren Street.
