Maricopa County pushes for a surge in September dog adoptions

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is working to increase dog adoptions this month in an effort to keep shelter capacity at optimal levels.

“Even with our high adoption numbers, the number of dogs coming in each day still exceeds the number of dogs leaving,” said Kim Powell, public information supervisor for MCACC.

She said in August the county was taking in an average of 50 dogs a day, but there were 32 adoptions in one day, bringing the shelter's capacity to about 1,000.

“This is not sustainable. In my two years at MCACC, I have never seen that many dogs at one time,” Powell said. “That's why we need to have a surge in adoptions in September.”

MCACC set a goal of 1,100 dog adoptions in September, an average of 36 adoptions per day.

Officials say that at the current rate of dog adoption, the shelter's dog population will be reduced by about 150 dogs by the end of the month.
