Maricopa County shelter waives dog adoption fees to reduce overcrowding

This weekend, Maricopa County Animal Shelters will be waiving fees for all dogs. “Empty Shelters” events are held when facilities are facing capacity issues.

Due to overcrowding, the shelter divided the kennel into two sections, half of which were kept indoors and the other half outside.

“We have swamp coolers, fans and misting systems to keep the dogs ventilated when they’re outside because obviously it’s hot outside and it’s not an ideal time for something like this to happen.” Kim Powell of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said. .

Dogs sometimes end up in shelters due to changes in people’s living environments. Powell said capacity issues exist outside of the summer season.

“It is true that they tend to occur more often in the summer, but nationally, evacuation shelters were over-capacity last year.Although it did not decrease as much as in a normal winter, in the summer, various We’re seeing more dogs coming in for a reason,” she said.

Powell said the cost of pet spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines will also be waived.
