The two candidates running for Maricopa County sheriff spoke out about the allegations surrounding them during a debate on Thursday.
Republican candidate Jerry Sheridan said he was right to violate subordinate discipline reforms ordered by Judge Murray Snow.
The order came after Sheridan and his former boss, Joe Arapio, were found in civil contempt after a civil rights lawsuit in 2013 found police guilty of racially profiling Latino drivers.
“He also asked me to discipline about 45 of my subordinates for policies that didn't exist at the time, and I refused to do that. So I stood my ground,” Sheridan said.
Sheridan also said he was not involved in any process to assign officers to racially profile Latino drivers.
Democratic candidate Tyler Kamp, a former Phoenix police lieutenant, said allegations of sexual harassment by Phoenix police officers are unfounded.
“This investigation was not completed, and if it had been completed, I am confident that I would have been found not guilty, along with the other two individuals named in the indictment,” Kamp said.
City officials said the investigation has been completed. recordInvestigators determined the complaint was substantiated, but by that point Kamp had already left the police department.
