Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone announces plan to resign in early 2024

Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone resigned in January and announced he would not seek a third term. At a press conference Monday afternoon, Penzone also said he wants to “serve the public in a variety of ways.”

“I think in law enforcement you always have to plan to launch an investigation within a reasonable amount of time and have as much impact as possible,” Penzone said. “And pave the way for others to come in and improve it.”

County spokesperson Fields Moseley told KJZZ News that the Board of Supervisors will determine the process to fill Penzone’s position for the remaining year of his term.

“In the past, they accepted letters of interest, resumes, letters of recommendation, and asked applicants to fill out a questionnaire,” Moseley said. “Then they brought the candidates in for interviews.”

Moseley also said that “the board determines the process, which has fluctuated over the past five years.”
