Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone stepping up security around polling locations and drop boxes

In an update, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone says his office is dedicating a significant amount of resources to providing ballot drop-box security.

Fueled by former President Donald Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election, the dropbox has become a hotbed of conspiracy theories.

Since the beginning of September, Penzone says his office has received about 14 election-related information. He also prepared two criminal reports of his, which he sent to the county attorney’s office to determine whether he should be charged.

“It’s absurd to think that an individual can’t go to the ballot box and drop off a ballot or go to a polling place and not be harassed,” Penzone said.

So far, no arrests have been made. Penzone added that he believes mistrust of law enforcement and the polling process is weakening the country.

“The more people causing trouble, the more lawmakers there will be on the streets focusing on robberies and crimes against children, robberies, and all that we need to do. And babysit the polls because people have to cheat if that’s what we have to do to protect our democracy,” he said.

Penzone added that resources will be left at polling places so that people can vote safely. He added that distrust in the electoral process is weakening the country.
