Maricopa County sheriff removes body scanners for employees

Phoenix (AZ Family) — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office announced that employees no longer have to go through security scanners to enter jail facilities.

“We employ the best employees on the planet, and I trust them all,” said Sheriff Jerry Sheridan. “We must trust our employees and support what they do for our agency.”

In 2023, then-Sheriff Paul Penzone introduced the policy, treating employees passing through the facility like everyone else, requiring body scanners and searches of personal property and food.

This was in response to the arrest of a detention officer for smuggling fentanyl pills and methamphetamine into the Lower Buckeye Correctional Facility.

For now, the scanners will continue to be used on people entering facilities not employed by the sheriff’s office.

The announcement comes less than a week after an Arizona family reported that a state corrections officer who worked as a counselor at Lewis Correctional Facility in Buckeye was accused of smuggling drugs and cellphones to inmates. It was done.
