The Joe Foss Shooting Range at Buckeye Hills Regional Park will close June 30 in preparation for the transition to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The current permit holder, who has been managing the shooting range for the past six months, was notified last month that his permit would not be renewed, according to a Maricopa County release.
Once MCSO takes over, “more officers and deputies will be able to learn, qualify and requalify for firearms and the wait times for such training will be reduced,” the release said.
In addition to providing training for its own officers, MCSO also provides AZPOST-certified Law Enforcement Academy training for other law enforcement agencies.
“This decision prioritizes public safety and is fiscally responsible,” officials said in a release.
Once closed, the complex will be inspected and any necessary repairs or improvements will be made before it is transferred to MCSO.
