Political analyst Mark Halperin explained Monday how former President Joe Biden’s pardons for families could harm them.
In one of his final acts as president, Biden pardoned his brothers Frank and James, James’ wife Sarah Biden, and his sister Valerie Owens and her husband John Owens. Halperin, his “”2WAY Presidential Inauguration Special” pointed out that Biden’s sister Valerie has largely escaped “scrutiny” so far, but the latest pardon could put her in the spotlight. “The irony is that the Clintons were worried that Donald Trump would prosecute them, but he never actually did. We don’t know. [President] Donald Trump would do that. My guess is he wouldn’t have. He wouldn’t have asked the Justice Department to do it; [Attorney General nominee] Pam Bondi wouldn’t have done that,” Halperin said. “And I think this will reignite interest in getting to the bottom of things. I think they’ll be particularly positive about Val. She’s very nice, she’s great with reporters, and she’s been under very little scrutiny.”
“Now, I think there’s a reason to say, ‘Well, then why did Val get it?'” And it’s not because of the court, but because he did this that caused even more damage to the family. may give [will] “We can’t reverse that, but it will at least raise questions from some people,” he added.
The former president also pardoned his son Hunter in December after a Delaware jury found him guilty of federal gun and tax charges. The pardons for Hunter and five other members of the former president’s family all date back to 2014.
Mr. James is involved in Mr. Hunter’s overseas business operations, and Mr. Frank used his brother’s appointment in January 2021 to promote his law firm in Florida.
In a statement announcing the pardon, the former president said the family was the victim of “the worst kind of partisan politics.” He also granted preemptive pardons in the final hours of his term to former White House health adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley, and members of the Jan. He said he was not worthy of being a target.
