Planned Parenthood has temporarily closed one of its two clinics in Memphis following a federal appeals court ruling. This ruling allowed the Trump administration to prevent patients from using Medicaid to access reproductive health services.
A new law, recently passed by Congress and signed by President Trump, enacts a one-year ban for Tennessee Medicaid recipients from receiving care at Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide.
While the law doesn’t specifically mention Planned Parenthood, it targets organizations involved in providing abortions that receive over $800,000 annually in Medicaid funding. Planned Parenthood, which often finds itself at the center of political debates, is the largest reproductive health care provider in the country.
“Due to these restrictions, we have decided to temporarily close this health center starting Monday, October 6, 2025,” a message on the clinic’s website states.
The other Planned Parenthood clinic in Memphis, located on Poplar Avenue, remains open, according to the announcement.
A representative from Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi directed inquiries about the closure to the statement on the website. Other open clinics are located in Nashville and Knoxville.
It’s worth noting that Medicaid does not cover abortions, and Tennessee’s Planned Parenthood clinics ceased providing abortion services when the state’s ban went into effect in 2022.
