Mesa OKs county partnership to buy hotel as emergency housing for homeless

Mesa, Arizona — On July 3, the Mesa City Council unanimously passed an intergovernmental agreement that would allow the acquisition of the hotel and pave the way for the structure to be used as homeless housing.

With the acquisition, the City of Mesa and Maricopa County hope to provide temporary emergency housing for up to 500 people per year who are experiencing homelessness.

Maricopa County, at its board of oversight on June 28, agreed to provide Mesa with more than $4 million in funding from the American Rescue Programs Act to fund and revitalize the purchase of 70 hotels located at 6733 E. approved. Maine St. Mesa is making even more donations. Federal funding is expected to exceed $3.4 million to complete the transaction by the end of October.

The hotel is now owned by Phoenix-based Sunstay Bridge LLC, which purchased the property for $3.75 million in 2021, according to the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office.
