Meta is ending key diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives due to changes in the “legal and policy landscape,” according to a memo obtained by Axios on Friday.
Since President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in November, tech industry heavyweights, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, appear to be aligning themselves with the soon-to-be president. In the latest change in President Trump’s direction for Meta, the company is reportedly discontinuing DEI initiatives related to hiring, training, and procurement. According to Janelle Gale, vice president of human resources at Meta, wrote in a memo. “The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing. The U.S. Supreme Court recently issued a decision that signals a shift in how courts approach DEI.” wrote Gale. “This reaffirms the long-standing principle that discrimination based on inherent characteristics should not be tolerated or encouraged. The term ‘DEI’ has also come under fire, and why In part, this is because it is understood as a practice that suggests that some groups receive preferential treatment over others. ”
According to the memo, Meta will also disband its dedicated DEI team.
Meta on Tuesday also ended a number of efforts to fact-check and regulate speech on its platform. According to To Axios. Mr. Zuckerberg criticized his platform’s fact-checking for being “too politically biased.”
Big Tech companies under previous ownership, including Meta’s platforms Facebook and Twitter (now known as X), suspended President Trump’s accounts after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. But since Trump’s victory in 2024, executives at big tech companies seem to be bowing to Trump.
Mr. Zuckerberg recently met with Mr. Trump at Mar-a-Lago and Meta. donated Donated $1 million to his first fund. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, OpenAI, etc. made Huge donation to President Trump’s inaugural fund. Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, a key Trump ally, also announced Monday that he will join Meta’s board of directors.
In recent years, the federal government, universities, and other institutions have halted or scaled back DEI efforts that prioritize certain races in the wake of a series of lawsuits. In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that race-based college admissions is unconstitutional, and legal organizations have stepped up efforts to eliminate racially biased practices.
