A Michigan man broke down in tears Tuesday while telling a CNN reporter he voted for Vice President Kamala Harris based on her stance on abortion.
Harris has made support for abortion a centerpiece of her campaign, with Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett joining the court’s majority opinion in the June 2022 decision overturning Roe. He has often criticized former President Donald Trump, who appointed several Supreme Court justices. v. Wade upheld a Mississippi law restricting abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Jason Firth, a Harris voter, told CNN that his daughters motivated him to vote. “I have three daughters and four children in total. Women’s rights are very important to them and to my daughters,” Fasse said, her voice breaking. “I’m sorry, I got a little emotional, I didn’t expect that to happen. But you know, it’s just their body and the type of mind they choose. I told them , I want everyone to grow up in a world where everyone is welcome. That’s why I voted today.”
Abortion was a top issue for Democrats, including Harris, in the 2022 midterm elections, but Republicans failed to live up to expectations of a nationwide “red wave.”
New York Times/Siena College poll of voters in battleground districts released Sunday noted that 27% of women said abortion was their main election issue, compared to just 8% of men.
An October 2023 Wall Street Journal poll showed that 77% of Democrats support allowing women to have an abortion for any reason.
