With candidates starting to announce their intentions for the Alabama Legislature elections on May 19, 2026, Mike Elliott, a lifelong resident of Walker County, educator, small business owner, and conservative Republican, kicked off his campaign on Tuesday.
Elliott is vying for a seat in the Alabama House District 13, currently held by Representative Matt Woods (R-Jasper). This district encompasses much of the northern and eastern parts of Walker County, including Jasper.
Elliott highlights the burden that excessive taxes and government regulation can place on individuals, expressing a desire to achieve his full potential while staying true to the community of Walker County.
“In Montgomery, I will serve the people of Walker County with integrity, transparency, and honesty. I am sincere, with no hidden agenda,” Elliott stated. “My main goal is to ensure that Walker County has a voice and a place at the table alongside leaders like Greg Reed, Matt Woods, and Connie Lowe.”
“I’ve lived in Walker County my entire life, and there’s a lot to be proud of here. However, I want jobs for my children and grandchildren, low taxes, and the best educational experiences possible. Most importantly, I want to uphold the values of my traditional family,” Elliott added.
Elliott aims to build on the workforce development initiatives currently unfolding in Jasper and Walker County, striving to create ample job opportunities and establish a community where families can thrive and worship freely.
Elliott recognizes the importance of traditional family values, both in and out of the classroom, advocating for parental involvement in children’s education while also working to secure better fundraising opportunities for public schools and supporting teachers.
Living in Walker County with his wife Brenda, Elliott enjoys time outdoors with their son and two grandchildren, who share a love for farming. His faith plays a central role in his life; he values the time spent nurturing his family in the church and currently directs Sunday School at Saragossa First Baptist Church.
Having long aspired to be an educator, Mike fully committed to his educational path, earning a Bachelor of Science in Social Science and Secondary Education from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
He taught at various schools including Walker High School from 2002 to 2005, Lynn High School from 2005 to 2006, and Curry High School from 2006 to 2022. Currently, he remains active with the Walker County Board of Education as a teacher in the 180 program.
In addition to teaching, Mike has coached several sports over the years. His coaching experience includes overseeing girls’ national basketball and softball teams at Walker High School, boys’ basketball at Lynn High School, and various teams at Curry High School since 2009.
Elliott also owns a lawn care service that collaborates with the Alabama Electric Power Company.
