The public portion of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors meeting could turn into an extended City Hall or, many speculate, an episode of the Jerry Springer show.
The new chair, Hildi Angius, is proposing reforms that she believes will allow the government to conduct its business in a more orderly manner while preserving the people's right to free speech. She is asking her colleagues to help postpone the public offering until after the board meeting.
Angius said there was no public offering over a decade ago, and she, Steve Moss and the late Joy Brotherton all rode that horse to elect directors. Angius said issuing a public appeal right before a rally has worked well for many years, but times have changed dramatically, she said.
“There are so many problems and people are so angry. I'm not judging anything about this. They're angry. They're overwhelmed… and they're We want our voices to be heard,” Angius said. But she said long public meeting segments are an inefficient use of time and resources, and agenda items can sometimes wait hours before being acted upon.
“First of all, the Board of Supervisors is a business meeting. It's about doing county business,” Angius said. “Coach (Buster) Johnson said a few years ago when he was chairman that he wanted to put this issue behind him, but he ignored it as a board.”
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the board will meet next Tuesday instead of Monday. Mr. Angius is asking the board to reconsider this matter and reposition the call for proposals after this year.
From the pandemic to now, civic leaders have frequently called on the public, offering input at nearly every meeting, sometimes in a carefully scripted manner. Angius doesn't know how they or the public will react to her proposal.
“I don't think, well, there might be (a backlash), because everybody's going to get mad at everything you do, and when they hear this, they're like, 'You're violating my constitution. You’re suppressing First Amendment rights,’ and there’s no point in that.’ That has something to do with it,” Angius said. “Besides, there is nothing in the law that provides for making calls to supervisory boards or public authorities. We don't have to do that.”
