Montgomery County Commission Approves Funding for White Water Park
The Montgomery County Commission has allocated $1 million to assist with operational costs and pay existing bills for the Montgomery White Water venue.
During a meeting earlier this week, committee members reviewed the progress and challenges facing the 120-acre urban outdoor adventure park. Chairman Doug Singleton noted significant enhancements but pointed out that the venue isn’t fully self-sufficient yet.
“We realize it’s a process,” Singleton remarked. “We have an agreement with the city, which has provided support for operational expenses. Until the park achieves self-sufficiency, we need to cover those costs.”
Singleton shared that the venue reached record attendance over the last three weekends, with revenue increasing by more than 50% compared to last year. He believes the funding gap is set to decrease annually.
“The gap for next year is smaller, and it should continue to shrink over the coming years, eventually bringing us closer to being self-sufficient,” he added.
District 4 committee member Isaiah Sankey expressed cautious support for the initiative, indicating a desire for the park to eventually reduce its reliance on county funding. He compared it to other city attractions, mentioning that none had a similar hefty price tag.
The Montgomery Whitewater park, which opened in July 2023, has a governmental backing of $90 million and is centered around an artificial rapid, offering numerous outdoor adventure activities. It was envisioned as a long-term “anchor” for the city’s economy and tourism, aiming to enhance recreational opportunities that already contribute significantly to Alabama’s economy. The five-year agreement with the county stipulates that the venues must become profitable, while the county covers any operational deficits.
So far, the park has only utilized about 20% of its potential, with future attractions planned, including rope courses, zip lines, and newly added whitewater tubes, combining thrill with fluid movement. Additionally, a hotel is being constructed.
Executive Director Jason Wilson has mentioned that the park is projected to increase its revenue by another 40-50% in the next couple of years, with a goal of becoming self-sufficient by the end of the five-year plan.
Since opening, Montgomery Whitewater has attracted over 9,000 visitors, hosting various events, from athletic competitions to concerts and dining experiences. It was recognized by a magazine as one of the most prominent places worldwide in 2024.
The Montgomery City Council had previously committed to donating $500,000 annually to support the park for the next three years.
